Projects at Westinghouse Electric Co.

The following is a detailed presentation of the projects, and my roles within each
*Images are publicly available.  Sources are provided within each, respectively.
Haiyang AP1000 Balance of Plant Control System

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Emerson Ovation DCS

  • Distributed Control System (DCS) Architecture

  • Communication Protocols:

    • Ethernet

    • Modbus

    • Profibus

    • Digital/Analog IO

  • Control System Software design and development

  • Software testing

  • Technical Writing

  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Visio, etc..)

  • Microsoft Access

  • ASME B&PV Code

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and development of plant process control loops for plant systems within the next generation of nuclear power plants.

  • Produce design documentation for plant systems within the scope of my responsibility.

  • Apply Human performance tools to day-to-day tasks.  Our number one focus, quality.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

  1. Independantly designed a database tool for process improvements during the engineering design.

    • allowed for project management to monitor progress

    • completely automated

  2. Co-Authored and maintained of the team's "Standard Process Handbook".

    • it improved the onboarding process.  New Hires were able to essentially train themselves after

    • standardized team's overall process

    • increased quality and efficiency

  3. Completed Stage 1 of Westinghouse's Technical Leadership Development program.

  4. By applying Human Performance principles, I was able to effectively capture "lessons learned" and hold post-job briefs with the team after each software releases.

AP1000 Control Rod Drive Mechanism

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Manufacturing Processes

  • AutoCAD Mechanical/Inventor

  • SAP

  • ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code

    • Section II, Section III NB Class 1, Section V

  • Code of Federal Regulations

    • Title 10, Part 50 & Part 55

    • Ethical responsibility to Title 10 Part 21

  • Working within an NQA-1 Quality Management Structure

  • Utilization of Non-Destructive examinations

    • Visual, Penetrant, Magnetic Partical, Ultrasonic, Radiographic

  • Personal Application of 5S principals

  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc...)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cradle to grave development and support of the manufacturing for Section III NB Class 1 ASME B&PV code components.

    • Order nuclear grade materials to meet ASME Section II code requirements

    • Established the manufacturing process for certain sub-assemblies to meet the manufacturing specications

    • Troubleshoot Non-Conformances, and improve upon the processes, should it fail to conform consistantly

  • Sub Assemblies I was responsible for

    • Rod Travel Housing / Drive Rod Assembly / Guide Funnel Assembly

  • Sub Assemblies I assisted with

    • Motor Assemblies / Latch Housing Assemblies

  • Tested prototype and production assemblies with the in-house control loop

  • Design tooling and gages as necessary

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

  1. Volunteered assistance the Reactor Coolant Pump team with misellaneous tasks.

Small Modular Reactor

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Research & Development

  • Nuclear Engineering

  • Instrumentation hardware

  • Equipment Qualifications

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Working on a side project to my normal duties with with Balance of Plant control systems group, I took part in a research project to identify which instrumentation in the Reactor Coolant System from the AP1000 could be used on the future design of the Small Modular Reactor (SMR).  Assuming the new SMR Reactor Coolant System had similar processes to measure as the AP1000, which of these instruments, already prequalified for nuclear use, would be useable in the more extreme and radioactively harsh environment within the SMR?
